Runway 09 and runway 27 can be the same strip of pavement. The number changes because you are looking along it from the opposite end. Once that idea clicks, an airport layout becomes much easier to read.
For aviation enthusiasts, those short labels are part of what makes airfield artwork interesting: a few characters give the geometry meaning. Here is a compact guide to the numbering convention, followed by a way to look at the details in your next airport-inspired design.
What does a runway number mean?
Under the convention described in the FAA's runway-marking guidance, the designation reflects the runway centreline's magnetic direction, rounded to the nearest ten degrees. Divide that bearing by ten to get the number.
- 09 corresponds to approximately 090 degrees: east.
- 18 corresponds to approximately 180 degrees: south.
- 27 corresponds to approximately 270 degrees: west.
- 36 corresponds to approximately 360 degrees: north.
These are illustrative headings, not a particular airport’s runway list.
Why does the other end have a different number?
Reversing direction adds 180 degrees: eighteen runway numbers. That gives 09/27 in our example.
What do L, R and C mean?
L, R and C mean left, right and centre, viewed on approach. In a simple parallel pair, 09L becomes 27R at the opposite end. Check the official diagram for any specific airport.
Why can a runway be renumbered?
The magnetic reference can change even when the pavement stays put. NOAA explains how movement in Earth's magnetic field affects runway names: as a runway's magnetic bearing changes, its designation may need updating. That is one reason an old airport image and a newer chart can show different labels.
It is an interesting detail to notice in an archive photograph or a collection of airport artwork. Treat a difference as a question to investigate, rather than immediately assuming either image is wrong.
Look again at the airport layout
Try following one runway from end to end in a design. Find its two labels, then look at how that long axis relates to neighbouring runways and the wider composition. You can enjoy the pattern first and return to the smaller details afterwards.
